The Boat

Katla is a 26ft Wooden Gaff Cutter built by Martin Lund in 2006 of the Wynfall design by Mark Smaalders.

She is
Carvel built of Mahogany planks over sawn Pine frames. The planks are fastened with Stainless Steel (316) screws and the frames are glued and fastened using wooden pegs and Galvanised bolts. Before painting, all wood was treated with a mixture of Turpentine, Pine Oil and Cuprinol.

The deck is Marine Plywood epoxy laminated and covered with chopped strand mat in epoxy resin. The Spar is of Siberian Larch. The rudder is transom hung on Stainless Steel (316) pintles.

The ballast keel is a Stainless Steel (316) box of 6mm sides and bottom, which has lead ingots in it. The lead is then laid in poliester resin inside. Five Stainless Steel (316) tubes are welded inside vertically through the keel box, where the keel bolts go through, meaning the box is completely sealed from seawater. There are 5 Stainless Steel (316) keelbolts to carry 1.5 tonnes. It is a massively strong construction.

There are no through hull fittings and a water tight bulkhead under the cockpit.

The broker described her as: 'A sturdy and salty little lady. Which will appeal to traditionalists on a budget'.

There is no inboard engine, no toilet, no electronics, and traditional (Block & Tackle) rigging (no winches).

Happy New Years

Yes this Pikey is still very much alive and kicking....
Hoping that you all had a wicked Xmas & New Years ... I did (from what I've been told)!

Dave from Brighton is over here for the next month and I am writing this from an Internet bar in St Martin after a few days island hopping north from Antigua.

Antigua English Harbour -> Antigua Jolly Harbour -> Nevis -> St Kitts -> (Becalmed off of Saba) -> St Martin ... who knows?

Dave has been loving it with Scurfing (towed longboard) in English Harbour and Water Skiing & Wake Boarding in Jolly Harbour.

I'll post a proper update soon.

Belated festive snogs, kisses & cuddles to you all ... !!!

  1. Hey Simon!
Good to hear that you're still kicking. Tell us how the enginless sailing is going! Are you in Marigot Bay? Plenty to do in St.Martin, hope you enjoy the hustle and bustle.

Eagerly awaiting for the next update

  2. Yes we are anchored in Marigot Bay and Marcus & Jess have been here on their way back from a delivery. We have been enjoying the nightlife but everything seems to close up 'early'. We found ourself having to go to a strip club as it was the only place open at 5am where you get a drink!

While the engineless sailing has been going well, sometimes frustrating in dead calms ... As of today I have purchased a couple of outboard engines as the price was to good to ignore. A Mercury 4hp longshaft for Katla and a Yam 2hp for the Avon dinghy - more soon!
